[ lydia ends up holding her response in until she sees stiles. she lets him get the door for both of them before she actually says anything. ]
See, I would trust him more if I didn't have to be reassured that Isaac would deal with Derek if he got mad at me for moving down here with everyone else. But I'm glad you're not sleep walking according to him. [ a pause and a small smile. ]
Hi. I— I went home over the jump. Or over the jumps I was sleeping. I know you should be nogitsune free. Tell me I'm not wrong in assuming that.
[stiles waits until she's settled in the room before he turns to show her the 'self' symbol raised on the skin just behind his ear as an answer to her query. he turns back around and matches her smile.]
We sealed the nogitsune up nice and tight, I hope. Not super excited to go through all that again, anyway. [scratching at his neck distractedly.] I guess the ship and stuff that's been happening has made me kind of nervous about it though, so that's why I've been having Derek listen.
[that's why he had derek take the key away from him and do... whatever it is he did with it.]
Why would Derek be mad at you moving down here with the rest of us, anyway?
I'm pretty sure we all don't want you to go through that again. For partially selfish reasons and you know— [ not wanting you to go through it again because that sucked for you. ] You're not wrong in being nervous, the ship likes to mess with all of us enough that at this point the nogitsune would seem par for the horrible course. That does lend itself to us keeping the room on a floor away from all of us. Least amount of potential backlash that falls on us.
[ lydia ends up cringing a little at stiles' question. it's not just her story to tell and she honestly doesn't know how stiles would react to it. truth be told, a large part of her just doesn't want to tell him in case he reacts badly. allison might be here now but if there's one thing lydia knows it's that people don't stay. she doesn't want to risk having her friends mad at her. ]
That is a very complicated story that— trust me, Stiles, you really don't want to know. His reasons are— mostly valid.
[nodding along with lydia because yes, this is basically precisely what he was worried about and derek's vague reassurances hadn't done much to calm him in that regard.] Yeah I. I think I still have my room on the thirtieth floor?
That's probably far enough away, right?
[stiles frowns at lydia's cringe, and he doesn't feel any better when she avoids the question as well. he can't even begin to imagine what might have happened that lydia actually thinks derek's opinion is valid, she practically never agrees with derek
for good reason, really, derek isn't exactly the best guy at making plans and lydia is, well, lydia.]
Lydia... are you okay? [because if she really doesn't want to tell him what happened, he at least wants to know that she' fine now, whatever it was.]
That should be fine. I mean it might end up affecting other people but honestly, you could go up to the fiftieth floor and I'm pretty sure we'd run into that problem eventually.
[ the sad thing is that lydia didn't agree with derek for a long while, but she's had time to grow up and think about it. while admittedly she doesn't completely agree with the opinion, she can understand it at base value.
derek still sucks at making plans though and that will be a constant until someone teaches him how. ]
I'm— [ she pauses briefly, unsure of how to really answer that. on the one hand she feels fine enough, but there was times she wasn't. ] I'm fine now, Stiles. I promise. I've just been here a very long time and stuff happens. People come and go and people you really hate end up coming too. It's in the past. I promise I'm totally fine.
I'm gonna say something that could sound really callous right now, but I could honestly care less how it's going to affect people aside from us [he makes a sweeping sort of gesture that she'll hopefully understand includes their entire floor of beacon hills natives.] and maybe a handful of other people on this ship, okay.
[somewhat warily. there are so many not very good choices that are available under the classification 'people you really hate'] Fine. But you'll tell me if things get bad again or Derek's being an ass about anything?
[because stiles might actually get along with derek for the most part these days, but he's still an ass more times than not.]
It's not too callous if I'm willing to agree with you. Besides, have you met some of these people? I'm not saying some of them might deserve it— [ but they might deserve it.
maybe it's odd to smile at that, but lydia can't help the smile that crosses her face when she nods. ] You mean more than normal? I promise. No hiding of any weird goings on with me or anything that might mean bad. Acceptable enough of an answer for you?
[ is she teasing, is she being serious? the world may never know. ]
Uh, yeah. I have. [slight wince, but no further explanation than that. lydia can have her secret and stiles can have his, telling scott about arima had been difficult enough.]
Yes. More than normal. We both know Derek isn't happy unless he's waving his cane at people and telling them to stay off his lawn at least once a month.
[stiles tilts his chin up, pushes his lips and his brow together and regards lydia in a mock, business like manner. it's pretty damn obvious he's not being serious, but then, stiles has never been one for subtlety.]
Your terms appear to be acceptable, Miss Martin, I do believe that we have an accord.
[ the only thing lydia does that even signifies that she heard that is narrow her eyes just a tad. she won't ask, but you better be okay stiles. ]
Or the walker, but maybe that's just for special occasions. Or when his werewolf hips are hurting too much.
[ the only thing that keeps lydia from rolling her eyes and laughing at the way stiles acts is her pursing her lips. any other time it might look like she's mad, but as it stands it look too mocking to really have any bite. ]
Well then, Mr. Stilinski, I do think we have to shake on it before this accord is official. I won't have you backing out on it.
[he's getting there, lydia. he's finally starting to get there.]
Well you know he's not as young as he used to be, Lydia. Especially considering I still can't get a straight answer out of any of them as to how the whole aging thing works for werewolves.
[and maybe his feelings for lydia are different now than they used to be, but stiles is still the kid who spent years obsessing over her, so it's a pretty simple matter for him to distinguish her faintly irritated pursing of the lips from her quietly amused one.]
I would never dream of such a thing, but if it will put your mind at ease, Miss Martin. [and he holds out his hand to shake]
And he gets into all those fights, it does horrible things to his poor bones. [ it's then that she has to take a moment to hold back a laugh. ] Maybe he never got a straight answer himself. Or he doesn't want to explain it because it's something— like them being able to control how they look as they age. A perk to go with the whole fast healing part of them. It's not that much of a stretch.
[ which, to be honest, sounds cool from a scientific stand point. when stiles holds out his hand she takes it without missing a beat and nods just once with what actually looks like a smile. ]
It puts my mind at great ease, Mr. Stilinski. [ a pause. ] And if you want to laugh right about now, I won't actually be that offended.
[stiles' lips twitch for a moment, pressed tight together to try and fight it, but at lydia's blanket permission he allows himself to let go, releasing her hand to hunch over double and wheeze his laughter into his knees. it's the first real, honest laugh he's had in awhile, and he appreciates that it came from lydia of all people.
he eventually gets his wits back around him and sits up straight again, chest still a little tight but in a good way now.]
Let's be real here, it's probably him not knowing. [innocent little shrug] At least if we're going by the law of averages, that's usually the reason he doesn't explain things.
perma-action i'm really just getting lazy with the subject line, surprise.
