[John's eyebrows shoot up and then he lets out a derisive (yet somehow still amused) snort, getting up and going over to his door. He opens the door and steps aside.] Come on in.
[The place is really pretty immaculate. Really, the only noticeable things out are a robotic leg, a guitar, and a tiny giraffe toy. John himself looks a lot healthier than the last time he saw Stiles, more color in his face, no more dark circles.] You seem a lot better.
[stiles points a finger in john's direction with the hand that isn't busy holding a jar full of what looks like black dust.] You have no proof that I was feeling bad in the first place. [and then he sort of wiggles his finger and it... maybe moves a bit more than it really should.] I'm crazy flexible right now but I'm sure you don't really want to hear about that, do you 41?
Right. So welcome to Stiles' first installment of "so you know a werewolf, now what?"
Today we're going to run over a few precautions, answer a few questions, and I'm gonna introduce you to this incredibly useful thing here [he pats the jar in his hand] and how it might just save your life.
[stiles makes a face at john and pulls the jar back against his chest.] It's mountain ash, not dust. And if you use it right, it can form a barrier that werewolves and other supernatural creatures can't cross.
[stiles just. can't help but laugh a bit at the question because wow he wishes it was the easy instead of all this 'clap if you believe in fairies' nonsense.]
Not even close 41, nothing is ever that simple in the supernatural world.
First of all it needs to form a solid, uninterrupted line. This can include a circle, of course. As long as the circle meets cleanly. And it takes a bit more effort from you as well, this is where it gets a little interesting, okay.
What makes the mountain ash work properly is belief. You have to believe that it will work. Have to believe that you can make it work. Get it?
[he shakes his head.] Listen if you go into this with words like 'I guess', you're already going to fail.
Also. [stiles holds a finger up.] If I was a werewolf, I couldn't teach you how to do this, werewolves can't handle mountain ash. That's the entire point.
To be fair, it doesn't have to be a circle if you trust the walls to hold up like I do here. You could just do a line from one wall to another.
Which is honestly preferrable because I only have so much mountain ash and I don't exactly want to be throwing it around. [a shrug of his shoulders.] Sure I can use it again, but I also don't know when I'll manage to get more.
[snickering a little at anti-wolf mode] Yeah, a human can cross just fine. And mountain ash tends to work on any kind of supernatural creature, not just werewolves. It kept a kanima trapped once.
[stiles literally gets this question everytime from people. he's beginning to question other people's study habits, but then it's hard for him to remember sometimes that he's the only weirdo who spends 3 hours researching something for no real reason at all.]
Mountain Ash is another word for the Rowan tree. Rowan trees are known for having magical properties.
[does stiles seem like a kid who thinks a good saturday night is scrawling through wikipedia for 4 hours straight? wait, no, don't answer that.
stiles rolls his eyes a little and shakes his head.] It'd be nice if it were that simple but I'm going to be honest and say the only people I've ever seen use Mountain Ash aside from me were Druids. Though maybe that's just because Deaton's instructions are terrible.
